Geology & Rock Formations

Where Stone Tells the Story of Millions of Years

Sandstone pillars, basalt outcrops, limestone karsts — the Czech Republic holds an extraordinary record of geological time, written in rock.

Prachov Rocks: A Sandstone Labyrinth in the Heart of Bohemia

The Prachov Rocks form one of the densest concentrations of Cretaceous sandstone towers in Central Europe. Their narrow passages, natural viewpoints, and marked trails make them a reference point for anyone studying Czech geology on foot.

Adrspach–Teplice: The Rock Town of Upper Cretaceous Sandstone

Covering nearly 1,800 hectares, the Adrspach–Teplice Rocks represent the largest sandstone formation in the Czech Republic. The area is split into two distinct rock towns, each shaped by different erosion patterns over 85 million years.

Three Geological Facts Worth Knowing

Cretaceous Sandstone Dominates

Most of the well-known Czech rock formations date to the Upper Cretaceous period (100–66 Ma). The shallow inland sea that covered northern Bohemia deposited thick sequences of quartz sandstone, which later eroded into the towers, gates, and canyons visible today.

Protected Landscape Areas

The Czech Republic designates its most significant geological areas as CHKO (Protected Landscape Areas). Bohemian Paradise, Adrspach–Teplice, and Broumov are all within designated CHKO boundaries, which regulate access, climbing, and trail development.

Active Geological Research

The Czech Geological Survey (geology.cz) maintains an ongoing database of rock formation studies. Research from the 2020s has refined age estimates for several Bohemian sandstone outcrops using updated biostratigraphic methods.
